Hi world, I want to learn languages!

TASK 1

Visit the sites of Duolingo and Babbel - explore each for at least  15'. Choose a language you do not know and try the activities.

  1. What do the two sites have in common?
  2. How do the teachers approach the learnes?
  3. What methods do they use?
  4. What is your feeling about the site, would you like to use it systematically?

TASK 2

Go to www.duolingo.com/classroom/eqwduk

Follow the instructions.

TASK 3

Learning from each other is the most natural thing in our life. Browse the web, search for more sites offering support for learning various languages.

  1. Choose one site you like most. Enter the URL into the comment to this blog.
  2. One student - one site! Check in the comments whether your choice is not already taken by someone.
  3. Evaluate the chosen site and add the info to your comment entry. Include a set of basic information:

  • types of support (from complex teaching to specialized  practice, e.g. idioms only)
  • how many languages are available
  • free/paid range of service
  • site navigation
  • page design
  • positives
  • negatives

    1. Task 3
      Duolingo offers 19 languages.

It can be used completely for free, but if you want to have unlimited lives you have to pay monthly about 7 dollars. I am using Duolingo for free and I do not feel any major disadvatages.

Duolingo's both site and phone app is user friendly and it is easy to navigate in.

Page design is kind of childish, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The use of various images on the page can help you understand the language quicker.

      Positives
      - easy to use, free, motivational, family friendly, has phone app, has an option to train your pronunciation, has podcast

      Negatives
      - only 5 lives for free, teaches only to a B2 level of language

Easy to use, offers plenty of examples for each word and had a rich vocabulary. Not too helpful with learning grammar.

  3. https://www.rosettastone.eu/

Rosetta Stone offers 24 languages in total. Unfortunately, this website is "premium", therefore you're forced to paid unlike the other websites such as Duolingo.

There is self study and coaching available, but with coaching the prices soars to 29,67€ per month. You can also get a lifetime plan for 478€ which according to them is "the best value". Unless you're going to give up learning a target language after a month.

The UI is clean and simple, nothing more to say.

With positives I'd say it's a well established said that's quite polished, they're still trying to keep up with the new services such as Duolingo.

Only negative for me, personally is the price.

  4. SpanishDict (https://www.spanishdict.com)
SpanishDict is an easy to use browser app offering grammar lessons with real life situations and various dialects, verb conjugation lists, cheatsheets, a reliable English-Spanish translator and vocabulary lists to practice. It has a „Word of the day“ feature and offers widgets for mobile phones. The only available language is Spanish but it allows the app to fully focus on its specifics. The app is free and offers a paid version with more resources. It is regularly updated.

  6. There is only one language and that is German. It's free, but it's a little bit harder to navigate the page due to its graphic design. At least I feel little bit confused.
There are many exercises regarding grammar and vocabulary. This site works well with the textbook.
The downside for me is the design.

  8. https://www.busuu.com/

Busuu ofers over 12 languages to learn in total. Its service is free but user is bound to learn only 1 language if not swayed by their premium offer.

Busuu focuses mainly on the practical aspect of language, how to use it in a conversation and how to not get lost after a simple question directed at you.

Visually, it is very friendly and you most of the time know what, how and where are things going on. The main negative however, is the price of the premium, which offers a huge amount of benefits, but puts free users at massive disadvantage in comparison.

  9. https://www.onlinejazyky.cz/ - fun way to learn, everything is well explained, disadvantage is that you have to pay for it. The website is simple to use and the graphics are simple and pretty. It is the only page that I am able to get back to because it is a very funny way to learn. Other pages don't the charm for me, because they are boring and I just can't get back, because I take it as I have to actually learn something, do the work really. With this one, ofc I have to do the work, but the site makes it funny, so I don't have to work that hard really. It works with telling the user some theory, but in a funny way. And then there are some exercises after which you get a feedback (also very funny).

  10. Task 1:
    1) The tasks has similiar teaching style, matching words, filling in blanks etc.. but Babbel seems a bit better, duolingo tasks gets old very soon.

    2) You are being approached depending on your level of knowledge of the language.

    3) Filling in blanks, first clicking on words and later writing them yourself, using entire conversations or stories.

    4) I regularly use duolingo, but Babbel seems very good as well, might use it in the future.

    Task 3:
    learnonlinelanguages.com

-This site offers lectors that will help you learn the language, either from a scratch, as a begginner, or just improving your language skills.

    - They offer 10 languages.
    - Page is sadly only paid, because it offers specialized lectors.
    - The webpage is simple, and fairly easy to use with all necessary informations.

Negatives (Paid, small amount of languages)
Positives (Lectors that can make time for you anytime, adjust to your needs)

  11. I worked with "Openculture.com"
It offers 48 languages and many ways of absorbing the content. You can listen to a language on spotify/itunes if it's avaiable, PDF files and websites.

Pros: 48 languages, it's free and it offers loads of different approaches/sources of information

Cons: some languages are summerised into a one file so a person needs to do more research somewhere else.

  13. https://begin.babbel.com/

babble offers 13 languages for English speakers to pick from. In a design it is similiar to duolingo, however unlike duolingo this app also allows you to switch difficulty when you feel the exercises are either too difficult or not enough. With Babble, you don't havbe to start from beginning.

Babble mainly focusses on improving users vocabulary, their grammar, and sentence structure. You can choose your lesson timespan. All the things you learn are spoken out loud.

Babble registration is free of charge and first lesson in every course is free as well. However full version is under the subscription payment, where yearly subscription costs 83.40$.

  14. https://www.internetpolyglot.com/ - doesn't force you to register right from the get go and offers many free lessons from wide variety of language. But the overall complexity of the site like choosing a study plan or the content of the lessons itself isn't that complex.

Pimsleur is an app that is kinda similar to Duolingo. It offers a large variety of languages the learners can choose from. Fortunately, a free version is available. The app also sets up a timer for you so you can see how much time you’ve spent in one lesson and based on that you know what difficulties in language learning you are facing. There are 30 lessons in total (for Spanish).

It may not be the website that makes you fluent in a language, but it is the website that can be considered the best little helper that smooth out the road to becoming fluent.

    Pros:
    - Good starter for beginners.
    - Feel like a guiding hand.
    - The free version gives you plentiful ways of learning, not just flashcards like other learning programs/apps.
    - It's not just for languages. It can also teach you math, science and economics.
    - Decent amount of languages.

    Cons:
    - User-generated content doesn't always end up being helpful.

    1. https://prectime.cz/

This site offers 3 languages, English, Spanish and German. There are 85 animated lessons for each language, but the courses are more suitable for beginners. full prectime is spoken in 23 accents and the goal is to teach a person a foreign language as best as possible, to be at a level where they can use it without any problem, in the shortest possible time. There is also a posiibility to talk to a native speaker of your choice. Prectime offers a free version to try, but to complete all lessons you have to pay either annual access to all languages for 3 220 CZK or unlimited access for 6 930 CZK. The site is easy to navigate and intelligible, suitable even for kids. There is also a mobile app for both Android and IOS.
The positives for me is the acces for all the languages after paying the annual acces, and also the design of their site. The negative is surely that it is quite expensive, but on the other hand, you can also get unlimited access, which I think is adequate.

  22. FluentU - https://www.fluentu.com/

A very similar site to Duolingo, it even offers similar service to Duolingo, but on top of that FluentU, offers videos that make you "immersed" in the language - something that Duolingo, its biggest competitor, doesn't use.

FluentU is not free - there's a mandatory subscription service with prices up to 30 USD per month and also has a limited amount of languages on their site

Even despite that, I liked that this site utilized videos and recordings, something I didn't really see anywhere else

  28. The site I’ve used in past that was not mentioned yet would be: http://kanji.nihongo.cz/home
types of support (mainly nouns, numbers etc. great for learning vocabulary)
how many languages are available – 1, japanese Kanji.
it is a website with free programm
site navigation – just the basics that it offers, could be better
page design – not very attractive
positives – it allows you to create a list of words you know sorted by category and write test to practise
negatives – as it is a small project, it’s range of possibilities are limited
