Scenario

Scenarios are decision-making games, stories or simulations, which can be used both for fun or for professional traning - e.g. for doctors, nurses, military personnel, drivers, social workers...

The branching enables the reader to decide - and to live through the consequences of his decisions immediately.

In the world of fiction, you might have read a series of fighting-fantasy books by Steve Jackson - for example Khare, Cityport of Traps.

Task 1
Play the following scenarios. Which of them would you choose for:
A military personel
B the final year of a vocational school
C 2nd grade of "osmilete gymnazium"

Enter your suggestions into the comments to this blog entry. Include the reasoning!

Examples of scenarios:

Reptile Island
Inside the Pyramid
Driving Home
Samurai
Post-Apocalyptic Survival

While writing the scenario, syou should always define the following:
1. Target group - age, proficiency
2. Task - what the class should do, identifying the final outcome and product
3. Aims and objectives: what the class will learn in these fields:
factual knowledge
language (vocabulary, reading skills...)
communicative skills
social skills

  1. A - Haji Kama
    B - Inner Vision
    C - Inside the Pyramid

Well, the military one is obvious, I would choose the suicide one for B because the students of final year would probably enjoy more mature content, and for C, the students are younger and probably don't have very developed vocabulary, hence the Pyramid.

  2. The scenario about depression and the one with driving is best for the B group. Rest would be fine for C.

  3. A- Haji Kama
B - Driving home - students in the final year usually get their driving licence
C - Reptile Island, Inside the pyramid - easy vocabulary

  5. For group B I would choose Driving home since it comes from a real life situation and could actually be useful. For Gymnasium students (C) I would say Inside The Pyramid because it carries adventure or the last one about the suicide could be used in a social sciences class to point out the importance of seeking help when dealing with mental issues and helping others with them.

  6. The military is quite obvious so I'll skip that one.

However, I think that "Inside the Pyramid" would be suitable for the students of the final year of vocational school. The language level isn't too difficult so I think that the students would have no problem understanding.
At the same time when we look at it it could be also suitable for the 2nd graders of the grammar school.
Let's be real, vocational school students in their final year have in average about the same amount of skill in english as the 2nd graders do.

But I don't know, if the vocational school students were extra smart I guess they could take on the other stories as well.

  7. B - Inner Vision.

C- Inside the Piramid - Theme, the level of language used in this scenario fits 2nd grade of osmilete gymnazium.

  8. A - Haji Kamal
B - Post-apo: content, that will probably be the most interesting for this age group, while not that demanding when it comes to language.
C - Inside the pyramid: good combination of topics for both language and history classes. Ideal for Gymnázium

    A - Haji Kamal
    B - Inner Vision
C - the rest of them i guess
Haji Kamal is the only story with military theme. Inner Vision should be for B because of the more serious content. The rest can be good for vocabulary for C.

  11. Reptile Island would be good for B group because the topic may be familiar to them. Egyptian Pyramids could fit the "osmilete gymnazium" students because they are young, do not have such a big knowledge of vocabulary and this one is easy so they could understand it well. I think the other scenarios may be quite harder because of vocabulary for these two target groups. I am not sure whether students of "uciliste" would understand that vocabulary, anaway they could translate it and find the meaning in dictionary. Also the decesion making would be easier for them because they are older and have more experiences. Ihnatolová

  12. A) The first one with Haji Kamal
    B) I would choose "Driving Home" because it's a great practice for anyone who is about to get a driving licence.
    C) I would choose "Reptile Island" or any other, all of them are good for learning vocabulary if nothing else.

  13. Driving Home would be good for B, because it could actually help them with driving skills and for C would be The reptile island because it's imaginitive, thez can go imediately go step back if they mess up and also it's somewhat funny. Vávrová Kateřina
